Abstract

Justification: Ergonomic risks represent one of the main causes of musculoskeletal disorders and work absenteeism in mass consumption companies, affecting workers’ health and organizational productivity. Objective: To analyze the relationship between ergonomic factors and work absenteeism among employees of a mass consumption company in the city of Quito. Methodology: The study adopted a quantitative approach with a non-experimental, cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational design. A total of 378 workers from operational and administrative areas participated. A questionnaire based on the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire was applied, and institutional absenteeism records were reviewed. Results: Musculoskeletal disorders accounted for 46% of absenteeism cases. The dimensions with the highest level of risk were rest and recovery time, and repetitive postures and movements. A positive and significant correlation was identified between overall ergonomic risk and work absenteeism (r=0.62; p<0.001). Conclusion: Work absenteeism is mainly associated with ergonomic factors related to work organization and insufficient physical recovery, highlighting the need to strengthen preventive strategies and occupational ergonomics programs.
